A proper air conditioning electrical connection means a supply sized for the unit, protected in your consumer unit and isolated safely at the outdoor unit. Because we have our own electricians as well as refrigeration installers, the electrics are done by the same team and not left for you to arrange.
The work follows BS 7671, the UK wiring regulations, and is tested before the unit is switched on. You receive the electrical records once the job is complete, and the system moves on to commissioning and handover.

Dedicated circuit
A separate circuit from your consumer unit, sized to the unit's load and the cable run.
Protective device
A correctly rated breaker, with RCD protection where the regulations require it.
Outdoor isolator
A weatherproof isolator beside the outdoor unit so it can be switched off safely for servicing.
Interconnecting cable
The multicore cable between the two units, connected to the marked terminals.
Earthing and bonding
Earth continuity checked and connected so the metal casings are properly earthed.
Testing and records
Insulation resistance, continuity and polarity tests done, and the results recorded.

What the electrics involve
Most wall-mounted split systems need a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, protected by a breaker sized from the manufacturer’s data. Small units often run from a 16 amp supply, and larger ones need more. The cable size depends on the load and the length of the run, which is why we check the consumer unit and the route at the survey.
If your consumer unit is old, full or has no RCD protection, it may need upgrading before a new circuit can be added. If so, we explain why first. See our fuse box replacement service for what that involves.
Adding a new circuit is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations in England, which is one reason it should only ever be done by a qualified electrician. It is tested and recorded, never simply plugged into an existing socket.
Frequently asked questions
Can I plug an air conditioner into a normal socket?
Wall-mounted split systems should not be run from a standard socket. They need a dedicated, protected circuit with an isolator, which is what we install.
Do I need a new consumer unit?
Not always. We check spare ways, RCD protection and earthing at the survey and tell you whether your existing board can take a new circuit.
Who does the electrical work?
Our own electricians, working alongside the refrigeration installer. You do not need to organise a separate contractor.
What paperwork do I get?
Electrical records for the new circuit, once it has been tested and the work is complete.
